Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for the installation/removal of secondary fan
   • Access, interpret and apply installation of secondary fan documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work instructions
   • Select, and check for faults, equipment/tools for the activity
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Inspect and assess site conditions and determine if scaling is required and take action
   • Perform equipment pre-start checks start-up procedures
   • Identify, address and report potential risks and hazards
   • Communicate with other equipment operators and personnel using approved communication methods
   • Identify, address and report environmental issues
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
   • Use approved dust suppression and extraction methods
   • Ensure work area is well ventilated before entry
2. Install and maintain secondary fan
   • Isolate and lock out ventilation devices
   • Install and/or check secondary fan installation structure for soundness
   • Install and secure secondary fan using approved methods
   • Check secondary fan for correct operation in accordance with maintenance schedule and replace and/or adjust as required
3. Remove secondary fan
   • Isolate and lock out ventilation devices
   • Safely loosen and remove secondary fan
   • Ensure the safety of personnel and associated equipment and services
   • Seal any reticulation system openings and prevent entry of foreign material
4. Conduct post operational procedures
   • Carry out routine maintenance on equipment
   • Clean and store auxiliary services equipment
   • Complete housekeeping requirements
   • Process written and verbal recording and reporting requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of secondary fan installation and removal including:

using appropriate dust suppression and extraction methods

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the installation and removal of a secondary fan that meets all of the required outcomes including:

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions, and convey work progress

demonstrates completion of the installation and removal of a secondary fan that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

conducting equipment pre-start checks and start-up procedures

completing installing and removing secondary fans

conducting secondary fan installation checks, including;

air filter restriction indicator

computer systems

display instrumentation and gauges (indicators, gauges, levels)

vibration

correct alignment

visual and audio warning devices and lights

types of fans

power source connection

conducting routine maintenance on equipment and housekeeping activities

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in installing and removing a secondary fan through:

capabilities and limitations of secondary fans

operational maintenance schedules and secondary fan installation checks

basic geological and technical data

installation and removal methods for secondary fans

being prepared for fire/accident/emergency
